Data Products at Data Mesh Live

Data Mesh is a new approach to managing data at scale. A core concept behind this approach is the idea of Data Products. In this blog post, we’ll explore:
- What Data Products are
- What value they bring
- Which Data Mesh Live talks cover the subject
What are Data Products?
Data Products are a central concept in the Data Mesh approach. A Data Product is a self-contained package of data, code, metadata, and infrastructure that provides value to data consumers across an organization. In Zhamak’s original piece introducing Data Mesh, she believes that Data Products should be:
- Discoverable
- Addressable
- Trustworthy
- Self describing
- Inter-operable and governed by global standards
- Secured
What value do they bring?
Among other benefits Data Products promise to improve data quality and trust between stakeholders and when domain teams own their own data products, they are directly responsible for their data quality.
What talks are covering Data Products?
We have three talks diving into Data Products in more detail. These talks will help you under the concept in more detail and give you actionable tips for your own context.
Emma Houben (Nike) on “From kitchen to catalog: applying the chef’s discipline to data products” Emma will share how you can implement the principles of data product thinking, tackle common challenges in scaling, and embed governance seamlessly into your workflows. Kiran Prakash (Thoughtworks) on “What We Talk About When We Talk About Data Products” Kiran will break down what Data Products are (and what they’re not) before describing how to design them to provide real value to other stakeholders. Kinda El Maarry (GetPhoto ex HelloFresh, Prima) on “Productizing Data along the Value Chain” Kinda will discuss the different types of productized data, the governance roles required to manage them effectively and share best practices for effective management.
